The stubbornly high inflation readings to start 2024 are good news for one group of stocks — insurance companies. Stocks to watch In general, Wall Street analysts are buying the underlying story for these insurance stocks. For a slightly different angle, Wells Fargo analyst Elyse Greenspan upgraded Hamilton Insurance Group to overweight last week. Potential downsides To be sure, there are several factors that could derail the rally for insurance stocks. Another concern is so-called "social inflation," in which legal trends or regulatory changes can drive costs higher for insurance companies.

Oil prices were slightly lower Monday as Israel, aided by the U.S., fended off Iran's aerial barrage. The investment bank believes aerospace and defense stocks could outperform in the short run in light of growing geopolitical risks. The biggest ETF in the industry is the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) , with about $5 billion in assets under management. Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF (PPA ) and SPDR S & P Aerospace & Defense ETF (XAR) are two other popular offerings. To be sure, Liberum thinks the stock market could quickly reverse any losses as soon as the tensions in the Middle East ease.

The weekly chart of the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) shows how the long-term trend has become quite strong off the October 2022 low. The higher low in October was a sign of accumulation, showing that the bearish momentum going into the summer had begun to dissipate. Once this ETF broke above its July 2023 high, it traded higher to a price gap in December of last year. In this case, the homebuilder ETF resolved this pattern to the upside in late February with a break above $105. "We ended our buyers' strike and found several promising new investments that we believe will help us in 2024," the hedge fund manager said in an investor letter dated Monday and obtained by CNBC. Einhorn had stopped building new stock positions at one point in the fourth quarter due to worries about intensifying geopolitical risks. Because of his conservative positioning, his hedge fund, particularly the short side, was hurt during 2023's strong year-end rally. Einhorn's hedge fund returned 22.1% in 2023, net of fees and expenses. His stellar track record made him one of the most followed hedge fund managers on Wall Street.

2023 wasn't a good year for the health-care sector, but some investors expect it to make a comeback this year — highlighting biotech and medical tech as areas to watch. But now, Citi believes that "astute investors may find themselves with a trove of rebound opportunities." Citi's top picks in biotech include Biomea Fusion , Alnylam Pharmaceuticals , and Immunovant . Jared Holz, health-care sector strategist at Mizuho Securities Americas, named biotech firm Biogen as one of his top trading ideas for 2024. After being on the market for more than a decade, defined maturity bond funds are finally attracting attention. Traditional open end, bond mutual funds or bond ETFs, on the other hand, have no maturity date. One big advantage over owning individual bonds, however, is that defined maturity ETFs are easy to purchase on the stock exchange. How they work Each defined maturity bond fund holds securities in the same sector that come due in the calendar year chosen for the fund. Callable bonds are simply those that can be redeemed or paid off by the issuer prior to the bonds' maturity date, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Such forecasts have prompted a sell-off in a wide range of companies from makers of bariatric surgery devices to companies whose products address the health issues created by excess weight, from diabetes to sleep apnea. By contrast, the iShares U.S. Medical Devices exchange-traded fund has lost more than 22% in the last three months. Injectable weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, are considered highly effective but are also expensive, costing more than $1,300 per month. What the Israel-Hamas war means for defense stocks

New York CNN —When war breaks out, defense companies tend to make money. That means aerospace and defense stocks tend to rise during geopolitical unrest. Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

Wall Street analysts expect defense stocks will continue to move higher as a result of the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war making it less likely Congress will delay or curb the nation's defense budget. Defense stocks have underperformed as a group this year amid concerns that partisan divisions in Washington point to lower military spending. Notably, Bernstein analyst Douglas Harned doesn't expect the Israel-Hamas conflict will change the path of U.S. defense spending. He cited prior conflicts, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, that didn't end up boosting the defense budget. The Pentagon declined to share specific details of the types of security assistance the U.S. was providing to Israel. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Sunday ordered the movement of U.S. firepower closer to the region in order to project force and bolster Israeli security assistance. Insurance companies are in a tough spot with this year's stronger-than-average hurricane season, while climate-related perils continue to push catastrophe losses higher. Adding fuel to the industry's woes is the higher frequency of secondary perils, such as wildfires and flooding, due to climate change. These increased occurrences have been slowly adding to primary insurers' catastrophe losses and limiting profitability. While the industry is currently in the middle of peak hurricane season, insurance stocks typically rebound when the size of the insured losses become apparent or are announced by the companies, according to Piper Sandler. Insurance stocks tend to fall initially as big hurricanes near landfall and the likely extent of damage is appraised.

BOTZ has been a key beneficiary of the AI advance, garnering $594 million in inflows this year, according to FactSet. While many investors see AI as a tech play, Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities, believes that the benefit of industrials is an under-the-radar narrative worth taking a second glance at. And because data is what's driving AI, Maier said, larger companies like Amazon , Alphabet and Meta Platforms best retain that type of exposure. "Right now, [data] is what AI is, while we're trying to figure out where AI is going," he said. But for investors looking to diversify beyond the tech wave, Sohn affirmed that industrials are poised to benefit from the rise in AI-induced efficiency and productivity in robotics and automation companies.

Investors looking to trade the showdown over the U.S. debt ceiling should focus on stocks that are tied most to government spending, according to Citigroup. Lawmakers have been trying to find a way to raise the debt ceiling so the government can pay its bills on time. On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that failing to raise the debt ceiling will cause a " steep economic downturn ." As the fight over the debt ceiling — and talk of spending cuts — ramp up, some stocks will trade down, Citi pointed out. He believes the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense , SPDR S & P Aerospace & Defense , and Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETFs "could be useful off-the-shelf trading tools to consider."
